Superior to Isotopes
The inherent safety and high output of the linac makes site work much easier than using isotopes. The extra high output reduces exposure time. The extra small focal spot size produces super sharp radiographs. The absence of radioactive material makes the PORTAC inherently safe.
Flexibility for all radiography applications
The tremendous latitude of the accelerator permits it's use on combined thin and thick sections with a minimum of setup and fewer films. Experience shows that a 4 or 6 MeV accelerator can be used routinely on sections as thin as 1/2". This latitude combined with the reliable output makes exposures by the PORTAC a simple and routine operation.
Simple modular construction
The complete accelerator is made in six environmentally sealed modules. Each module is small and light enough for two men to carry easily. The inside 'works' are shock mounted and thermally insulated. Each box is balanced for easy lifting and has four large carrying handle

Inexpensive to buy and operate
The PORTAC is designed to be simples and easy to manufacture and service. This means that L&W Research can offer the PORTAC at a significantly lower price than other accelerators, portable or not.
Easy setup
| Interconnections are kept to a minimum. The only connections are electrical quick release plugs and self sealing coolant connectors. Interconnections can be made without any tools in less than fifteen minutes. There is no flexible wave guide. The X-Ray head is supplied with a 20 ft. cable/hose assembly, and is light enough to position without rigging equipment. X-Ray heads are interchangeable; changing from one head to another, with a different energy, takes five minutes. |
Safe and easy to use
Under normal operating conditions, the radiation level at the operator's control is less than 20 mR per hour. The operator's control has all of the control functions and all safety interlock indicators. It also has a readout of all important parameters to monitor system operation.
Uses reliable and proven components
Most of the components used in the PORTAC are easily available. They are chosen for their proven performance and reliability. For instance, the magnetron is one of the most common types and it used on over 2000 medical linear accelerators worldwide.
